What’s in my RSS reader? – November 2008

Published by at 8:32 pm under analytics, resources,Web 2.0

In November, for some reason, I was much more focused on the web analytics tools themselves, reading blogs about both Google Analytics and Omniture, since I use both tools.

Here are a few that are definitely worth adding to your reader (depending upon what tool you use).

Omniture Blogs – If you use Omniture in any capacity, the Omniture blogs are a must read. I mostly read Adam Greco’s blog about SiteCatalyst, since that is what we use most, but I’ve found a lot of the other blogs useful as well. Here are a couple highlights from this month:

  • Products Variable – Great post about setting up product variables in Omniture SiteCatalyst. For our website, we actually use the product variable to pertain to a program (degree or certificate) that we offer. We’re finding success using the product variable this way and it’s actually helped us make decisions for a couple campaigns.
  • SiteCatalyst Widgets – Omniture recently created functionality to feed dashboards into widgets to display in iGoogle, Google Toolbar, Windows Live, and Yahoo Desktop Widgets. I’ve created a few iGoogle widgets and I’m finding them very useful, especially because iGoogle has become such a part of my day it makes life a little easier.
  • Understanding VISTA Rules – Ah, VISTA rules. If you’re an Omniture user, you know that VISTA rules can seem like an enigma. This is a great post if you’re unsure how VISTA rules work and the pros and cons to using them.
Advanced Web Metrics - Brian Clifton’s blog deals specifically with advanced Google Analytics tips and tricks. Clifton is author of the book Advanced Web Metrics with Google Analytics and started this blog as a companion to the book.
  • Tracking social networks with Google Analytics using filters – Brian shows us how to create a social networks filter in Google Analytics. From his blog:

The result is a report that aggregates all visits from your social network in a similar way to how organic visitors or Google AdWords visitors are automatically aggregated by default. It provides an at-a-glance view to ascertain the importance/activity of social networks to you.

Google Analytics Blog – For anyone using Google Analytics, this is a must subscribe feed. The most up-to-date information about Google Analytics along with tips and tricks.
  • Want to track Adobe Flash? Now you can! – Last week, GA announced their capability to now track Adobe Flash. This blog talks about the funtionality and how to implement it. I can’t wait to try this out … if only I had video on this blog! :(
If you read an analytics blog that pertains to either Google Analytics or Omniture, let me know. I’d love to add it to my reader.

Writing Google Analytics tracking calls manually for any non-trivial Flex application is very time consuming operation. This add-on to Flex analytics will perform tracking automatically: http://riatest.com/products/targetstat-flex-analytics.html
