Web Analytics and Higher Education – a starting point
The idea for this blog came indirectly from a conversation with a colleague of mine at a recent conference. Every year at Penn State, we have a technology conference centered around technology in education. Topics range from css to usability to using blogs and wikis in education and much more.
It struck me that nobody was talking about analytics. Now, that isn’t to say that websites at Penn State aren’t using web analytics. It simply means the topic wasn’t on the agenda at this particular conference.
This got me thinking … how many university sites and sub-sites out there are not taking advantage of what web analytics can do? For those websites currently using some web analytics package, are they getting what they need from it?
Hopefully we can start some conversations around analytics for those non-ecommerce, non-advertising sites. You know, the rest of us! I hope you find the discussions productive.

Shelby,
I’m so glad that I found your blog through a backlink that you gave! This is so exciting that their are others in Higher Education that believe in the value of Web Analytics like I do and wanting to openly discuss it! I’ll admit that I’m a newbie in the field and am just now getting to the point of doing some exciting things based on actionable data pulled from the analytics.
You definitely have an attentive reader and I look forward to following your story especially through your post packed August.
